Event overview

Join us for the first AES Systems SIG session of 2024, delving into Critical System Heuristics (CSH) - a framework for paying attention to, understanding and refining boundary judgments.

In an ideal scenario, a system of interest is crisply defined within set boundaries with each boundary judgement explicitly guided by particular decisions. However, the complex realities that evaluators try to navigate and the selective nature of decision-making can introduce uncertainty and ambiguity. In this context, CSH, pioneered by Werner Ulrich and further developed with Martin Reynolds, emerges as a coherent and relevant practical tool. It offers a structured approach to critically examine boundary judgment issues through a set of thought-provoking questions related to purpose, control, knowledge and legitimacy.

Our discussion will be enriched by insights from the recent CECAN Webinar with Bob Williams: Setting Boundaries in Evaluation; The role of Critical Systems Heuristics’. The presentation slides and webinar recording are accessible through the provided links, and we encourage participants to review them before the SIG session.
Please watch the video or read the slides – and then we will have a facilitated discussion.
