Workshop Overview

This workshop will build an understanding of and the skills to embed Photovoice methodology within evaluation and planning processes.

Workshop Content

The workshop will include an overview of how Photovoice and where it fits within qualitative research design. It will provide guidance on the type of evaluation questions and evalaunds that would benefit from the PhotoVoice method, including strengths and challenges of applying this method.

The workshop will walk through each stage of the process including sampling, how to analyse the visual and auditory data through appropriate analytical frameworks; how to synthesise the findings with other primary and secondary data (qualitative and quantitative) and how reaching findings and making evaluative claims using this data differs from other forms of data.

Workshop participants will learn how PhotoVoice can shift power dynamics between evaluator and participant through a creative, fun and inclusive way. You will also learn about some of the benefits for participants engaging in a Photovoice project beyond sharing data. Workshop participants will get to have a play using the PhotoVoice method and discuss some of the ethical considerations required in using this approach. We will also share our experiences of using these methods and supporting others to facilitate the process.

Workshop Outcomes

Workshop participants will have a good understanding of:

• what evaluation questions and evaluands might be suited to Photo Voice

• the steps and processes involved in PhotoVoice

• the role of the evaluator as facilitator and skills required

• the benefits and challenges of PhotoVoice and suitability for different contexts

• what makes PhotoVoice different from other methods

Learning techniques

The training will use a mix of theory and practice. There will be ample opportunity to have a go at the PhotoVoice method and share experiences with the method. The training will be fun!

Who should attend?

Intermediate session assume the audience has a working knowledge of the topic or concept but provides accessible language and avoids technical details to ensure engagement from non-expert audiences.

About the facilitators

Emma Thomas
B.A., MA Applied Anthropology and Participatory Development; Member AES

Emma has over 16 years of experience in evaluation in both domestic and international development settings.  Emma looks for opportunities within evaluations to amplify the voices of those often excluded from decision-making processes. She seeks to promote significant and meaningful outcomes through evaluation. Emma has a strong interest in utilising participatory, creative and inclusive evaluation methods that enable participants to share and interpret their diverse experience. She promotes methods that facilitate positive impacts for those involved in the evaluation, incorporating skills building, fostering trust and relationships and building ownership of the process and results. Emma is well versed in complexity aware evaluation approaches and enjoys continuous learning adding new tools to her evaluation tool box.

Judy Gold
BioMedSci (Hons), PhD (Public Health); Member AES and PHAA
Co-founder, Cultivating Change

Judy is a program innovator, implementer and evaluator with 16 years’ experience working with national and international organisations to improve their program monitoring, evaluation and learning (MEL). This includes supporting organisations to develop theories of change to better understand, articulate and achieve their intended outcomes. Throughout her professional career Judy has particularly focused on issues affecting women and young people, including sexual and reproductive health and violence against women. In recent years Judy has been embedding design thinking and systems thinking and approaches to deepen client’s ability to better conceptualize and design their activities to ultimately deliver more impactful programs.
