This is a free seminar organised by the SA Regional Network Committee of the AES. Our seminar series provides an opportunity for you to meet with AES members and others in South Australia and to share and learn from the experiences of fellow evaluators. Members are encouraged to bring along colleagues with an interest in the topic even if they are not yet members of the AES. Please pass this invitation onto your networks.
What are the qualities that distinguish great art? Who determines these criteria? How is it decided what an artwork is worth?
This seminar will explore these and other questions about the evaluation of art. It will look at formal qualities used to assess and talk about artworks as well as other measures such as the status and visibility of the artist, the context of production and where the work sits in art historical terms.
Drawing on personal experiences as an ‘Art Advisor’ in the remote Aboriginal community of Maningrida, the seminar will reflect in particular on the challenges of art evaluation in a cross-cultural context.
