This is an exciting new role within the team, Research, Evaluation and Monitoring Lead. This position will be responsible for leading a high-performing team that provides research, evaluation and monitoring support and advice across the organisation on mental health and suicide prevention activities. The position oversees (in collaboration with program teams) the planning, design, commissioning, implementation and translation of research, evaluation and monitoring activities across Beyond Blue.

Job Description
The Research, Evaluation and Monitoring Lead will have a close working relationship with the Head of Research, Evaluation and Learning. The Lead is expected to build and nurture strong working relationships across the business and ensure the team provides outstanding, proactive business partner to both internal and external stakeholders.

This position will oversee (in collaboration with program teams) the planning, design, commissioning, implementation and translation of research, evaluation and monitoring activities across Beyond Blue.

Other duties and key accountabilities are:

Monitoring and Evaluation

Oversee the monitoring and evaluation activities undertaken across Beyond Blue to enable high quality project delivery by evaluation partners and effective use of findings in line with the Beyond Blue Evaluation Policy and Procedure.

Oversee the implementation of the Beyond Blue Performance Framework (outcomes/impact framework) and assist the Head of Research, Evaluation and Learning to drive impact management across business.


Oversee research activities undertaken across Beyond Blue to ensure quality, effectiveness, and the translation of knowledge generated.

Oversee the timely and proactive provision of evidence (e.g. literature reviews) to program teams to inform product and service design, implementation and continuous improvement.

Stakeholder Engagement (external and internal)

Maximise the involvement of people affected by depression, anxiety and suicide in research, evaluation and monitoring activities.

Work collaboratively with all team members and other teams within Beyond Blue to achieve overall objectives.

Plan and deliver research, evaluation and monitoring capability-building activities across the organisation to support learning and continuous improvement.

Strategy and Governance

As part of the unit leadership team, drive research, evaluation, monitoring and knowledge translation across the business.

Assist in the development, implementation, execution and continuous improvement of research, evaluation and monitoring strategy.

Project Management

Ensure project management and business as usual activities (including management of relevant budgets) are implemented in accordance with Beyond Blue processes and systems and are in line with company policy and program governance.

Provide high quality written documents including briefing notes, preparation of contracts and agreements, and project management documentation; provide input into the development of key reports, including Board reports, Beyond Blue external reporting, and ad hoc reports as required.

Team management

Work closely with Leads and Heads in program areas to ensure effective business partnership roles are maintained and strengthened.

Actively develop team members through developing staff work plans, professional development, coaching, and performance reviews.

Desired Skills and Experience
The ideal candidate will have the following skills and experience:

  • A tertiary qualification in a relevant discipline (post-graduate qualifications desirable). Experience in mental health and/or suicide prevention is desirable.
  • Extensive experience in evaluation and/or research (preferably in the not-for-profit sector) including an understanding of innovative approaches such as developmental evaluation, realist evaluation, implementation science, outcome measurement, and impact management, for learning and continuous improvement.
  • Understanding of organisational and adult learning principles.
  • Proven high-level stakeholder engagement with an ability to establish and nurture effective and positive relationships, internally and externally.
  • Ability to champion and generate enthusiasm for research, evaluation, monitoring and learning.
  • High-level communication (verbal and written) skills including the ability to adapt style to the audience.
  • Ability to communicate a vision for research and evaluation that is engaging and motivates others.
  • Ability to translate strategy into day-to-day operational activities.
  • Ability to see the bigger picture and to manage complex and competing needs.
  • Ability to identify potential issues and work with others to deliver innovative and realistic solutions.
