This is a free event organised by the New South Wales Regional Network Committee of the AES. Our free event series provides an opportunity for you to meet with AES members and others in the evaluation community and to share and learn from the experiences of fellow evaluators.
Deliverology, or, more simply, Delivery, is a systematic process through which system leaders can drive progress and deliver results. It began in Number 10 Downing Street in 2001. The NSW Government established the Premier's Implementation Unit in the Department of Premier and Cabinet in September 2015 and has been using the approach to support agencies to deliver the fourteen Premier’s Priorities. The approach has widespread recognition and is used by governments and global agencies including the World Health Organisation (WHO). A range of consultancies also offer it as an approach. It is set out in a range of books by Sir Michael Barber, including the beautifully-titled, How to run a government so that citizens benefit and taxpayers don't go crazy.
In NSW, Delivery is built around four pillars: Use of data, Fieldwork, Targeted actions, and Routines. While those topics sound very familiar to evaluation practitioners, in the books setting out Delivery, and the two days of training offered in NSW, evaluation is basically not mentioned. Nevertheless, Delivery has a lot to offer evaluation practitioners, and that evaluation has a role to play for Delivery.
Ben and Peter will set out the theory and practice of Delivery, and how it is being used in NSW. They will then discuss with participants what Delivery and evaluation have to offer each other.
Ben Barnes is an independent research consultant. Previously, Ben has worked as Director Evaluation in the NSW Department of Education and the Principal Research Scientist, NSW Centre for Road Safety in Transport for NSW. Ben was convenor of the NSW AES Committee from 2012 to 2018, and was co-convenor for the 2019 AES conference in Sydney.
Peter Ryan joined the Premier's Implementation Unit in 2015 and has also worked as an evaluator, including the development of the NSW Government Program Evaluation Guidelines and Evaluation Toolkit in 2016.
